Amena Zaman (State of Bengal Tribute) ✿

Friday 24th April — 19:00 - 20:00
93 Feet East (Main Room)

Sam Zaman aka State of Bengal (1965 -2015) was one of the pioneers of the Asian Underground movement and a DJ at the Anokha club night (Circa 1995). He was youth worker in Brick Lane in the early 80s and was part of the influential Joi Bangla collective. His track IC408 (1997) was a defining moment of the scene and is played globally to this very day. Collaborations with Massive Attack and Bjork followed as well as work with traditional Bengali musicians Paban Das Baul and Ananda Shankar. He DJed and toured internationally with his live band. He mentored and influenced many folks, including the Nasha collective. His sister Amena Zaman will be playing a tribute set on the 24th April, a week after his 61st Birthday. Brick Lane is the home of much history for State of Bengal and it is with the deepest of love to be playing his music at the Brick Lane Jazz festival.

Brick Lane Jazz Festival is joining forces with Tomorrow’s Warriors as our charity partner for the 2026 edition of the festival. We have worked together to create a unique opportunity to give back to the music community, having an impactful and lasting effect on the emerging UK Jazz talent. Donate now by clicking below:
