Bombay Jungle is a boundary-smashing London-based DJ collective who redefined the South-Asian club-scene in the early 90’s through their pioneering weekly night at the legendary Wag Club in Soho: the first underground South-Asian club night in London. Blending club culture with Bhangra, jungle, hip-hop breaks, and wider South Asian rhythmic influences, Bombay Jungle delivers sets that represented underground Asian London. Formed in West London by Matt Thomas (Impact Sound-System), Mits Singh (Hustlers Convention), and Mark Strippel (Panjabi Hit Squad, BBC 1Xtra) the multi-racial collective emerged from daytime raves, college parties and suburban, diasporic sound system traditions. During an era of racism and exclusion for the South-Asian club scene, Bombay Jungle set out to reclaim dance floors as spaces of resistance, celebration, and collective power. The club originally lasted just 12 months but holds a unique place in South-Asian club folklore, with each of the members diverging to form new movements. Mark Strippel co-founded PanjabiHit Squad, becoming Head of BBC 1Xtra and Asian Network and influencing the careers of talents including Jamz Supernova, Tiffany Calver, and Sir Spyro. Mits Singh was a member of seminal Sikh rap crew Hustlers Convention and now promotes Hip-Hop concerts for Academy Group.
