West-Londoner CARI's warmly inquisitive aura is as equally rooted in personality as it is regionality.
In the aftermath of a long-term romantic relationship, which also ran parallel to the pandemic, CARI documented her heartbreak, as well as her spiritual, and emotional recentering. CARI's inaugural single — which nods to when this era of her life began — "Colder In June" is a chiselled, ghoulish confrontation with oneself. Written in her ancestral home of Grenada — a region and safe space she frequents multiple times a year — CARI confronts her demons: "Before I make my happy projects, I have to get this out."
Now, CARI is ready to shed more of her skin. Formally titled FLUX, the artist's seven-track EP — inclusive of "Colder In June" — sees her not only embrace the scars and scorn of her last romantic endeavour, but also lean into self-worth and cherishing honesty as her battle-scars. "This project was started at a critical time," she shares. "My mental health was on the decline; I had big questions and no real answers. I really struggled to feel grounded and masked a lot through humour and wit. The stories told on FLUX capture my experience navigating heartbreak and fluctuating levels of self-esteem."
Backed by anchors of our contemporary R&B renaissance in PRGRSHN, Melo-Zed and Tendai and possessing a poignant and diligent craft in songwriting, CARI assists her tender, soothingly gripping vocals, acting as one of British R&B's most promising talents. "I'm of service to people," she says of her purpose. "Ultimately, I'm using my God-given talents to inform, heal and help others and myself."
