Errol & Alex Rita

Saturday 27th April
2am - 3:30pm
Village Underground - Official Afterparty

Errol & Alex Rita of South London-based musical movement/curatorial platform, monthly dance, concert series, record label and biweekly NTS radio show Touching Bass will be joining us for the Brick Lane Jazz Festival Official Afterparty.

Errol is one of the UK's most compelling, contemporary musical voices: DJ/broadcaster, music curator (prev. White Cube/Frieze, 180 Strand and Boiler Room), consultant, writer/host and founder of musical movement, Touching Bass. Underpinning it all is a passion for promoting the eclecticism of Black music as well as the culture and community behind it, with roots firmly anchored in his Caribbean heritage. His DJ sets are known for feeling beautifully loose, searching and soulful; unrestricted by genre and anchored by groove.

Over the past few years, the London-born artist has increasingly shared music further afield and in good company: from gracing Berlin’s Panorama Bar/Berghain and multiple tours of Australia, Japan and New Zealand, to playing alongside esteemed genre-hoppers like Theo Parrish, Josey Rebelle and Gilles Peterson. Along the way, there have also been wheel-ups on King Jammy’s legendary dancehall soundsystem in Kingston, as well as warm-up slots for the likes of Erykah Badu, Tony Allen (RIP), Flying Lotus and Yussef Dayes.

Alex Rita — the Copenhagen-born, London-based selector, illustrator, singer and designer — is a talented seamstress in more ways than one. Alongside her partner, Errol, she is the main force behind Touching Bass, the South London-based community-come-club night, concert series, record label, staple NTS Radio show and curatorial/creative studio, which has slow-cooked to become a musical institution.

As a DJ, her passion for stitching together patchworks of percussive grooves and organic sounds stem from a youth spent in the nature-rich lands of rural Denmark. Listeners can be blessed with everything from spiritual jazz and soul to broken beat and warm house grooves in one sitting. When not blessing the dancefloor Alex also presents Calm Roots; a monthly exploration of meditative and hypnotic sounds from around the globe, which has developed a cult following both online and IRL, including bookings at the likes of Brainchild (alongside Nala Sinephro) and We Out Here festivals.
