From Basement Clubs to Main Stage: The Evolution of the UK Jazz Scene

Thursday 23rd April • 11:00-12:00 • Flow State Hub, Ely’s Yard, E1 6QR

Over the past decade, UK jazz has had a startling resurgence, transitioning from the fringes onto major festival stages, drawing international attention and reshaping perceptions of the genre. This panel brings together author, musician and booking agent Andre Marmot in conversation with leading artists and public figures who have played defining roles in this resurgence.

The discussion will examine the grassroots ecosystems — independent promoters, community-led venues, pirate radio, youth education programmes and cross-genre collaboration — that underpinned the movement long before mainstream recognition followed. It will also reflect on the cultural and social contexts that allowed a new generation of artists to emerge, blending jazz with influences from grime, soul, Afro-Caribbean traditions and electronic music.

By centring first-hand accounts from those directly involved, the session offers an informed exploration of how infrastructure, community and creative independence combined to shift UK jazz from the margins to the main stage — and what lessons that trajectory holds for the future.
